Beware of Insurance Broker “Scam Artists”

02/10/2025 Written by: AP Aerospace

Insurance is a crucial part of financial planning, providing peace of mind and protection against unforeseen events. However, not all insurance brokers operate with integrity. Some brokers exploit the trust of unsuspecting clients, leading to potentially significant financial losses. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself from these practices.

If you’re concerned about your current insurance coverage and have questions about potential offers, reach out to our team for honest advice.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

Unsolicited Offers: Be wary of brokers who contact you out of the blue with offers that seem too good to be true. Particularly, proceed with caution if they offer a quid pro quo arrangement. Example: If you sign a broker of record letter to them, they will guarantee you a lower premium, or if you purchase one of their other “products,” they will discount your premium. Some of these tactics are considered illegal by state insurance departments.

Misrepresentation: Some brokers misrepresent the terms and benefits of a policy, leaving clients underinsured or without coverage when they need it most. If the broker has an inferior product, he/she might be tempted to “leave out” some details that, if known, might be a deal breaker for them winning the account. A trustworthy broker will clearly explain all terms and conditions. If details are vague or confusing, proceed with caution. Remember, it's buyer beware, and you are at an extreme disadvantage.

Pressure Tactics: Legitimate brokers will give you time to consider your options. If you feel rushed or pressured, it’s a red flag.

Tips: If you decide to accept another insurance proposal from a competing broker, although it may be uncomfortable for you to contact your AP Aerospace broker (and ask them for their help in reviewing the quote), that is your best protection. We’re in it for the long haul. Your AP broker can review the proposal with you and give an honest opinion. If you have a better deal, they will tell you. If not, they can quickly point out the “flaws” of the quote. Either way, we want to be your insurance broker for the long haul, and if we shoot you straight, even though we might lose the account, we hope that integrity will convince you down the road that you should trust us as your aviation insurance counsel.
