Protecting Residents During Extreme Cold Weather

01/28/2019 Written by: AP Senior Living Risk Management Solutions

Several states will soon be experiencing extreme wind chills and in some instances potential historic record setting low temperatures. In order to best protect your residents, staff, and visitors consider implementing the following best practices:

  • Review cold weather policies with staff
  • Test emergency generators
  • Understand state and local temperature guidelines and monitor temperatures throughout all shifts
  • Revisit Emergency Plans in event additional resources and support are needed or transfers are scheduled
  • Understand and monitor symptoms for hypothermia and frostbite
  • Increase frequency of monitoring resident temperatures; engage Medical Director/Physician if any decreases are identified
  • Encourage residents to wear warm clothing and those venturing outside to dress in layers
  • Offer warm fluids and beverages
  • Check wrapped pipes to ensure they are well protected and reinforce when warranted

Don’t forget to check on your elderly neighbors to ensure they have enough food and are comfortable. Warmer temperatures are on their way but in the meantime, we hope the above will assist in managing these next few days.

Proper planning by following the recommendations outlined above can help protect your residents during the winter weather conditions. To learn more or for help with developing and implementing your emergency plans, contact the AssuredPartners Senior Living experts.
